Book Review and Giveaway – And I Thought I Knew QTP

by Anshoo Arora on September 26, 2011

US readers: Order your copy of And I Thought I Knew QTP From Lulu.

I thought I knew QTP is the only book available that is aimed to explain concepts and theories behind automation using QuickTest Professional. Its quite common to the QTP community to choose an approach provided an issue arises. However, when asked why we choose one particular approach over the other or why an approach works well in a given scenario and fails in another, there are no answers available or poorly drafted ones. This book uncovers the ‘why’ by providing ample examples and scenarios.

And I Thought I Knew QTP can be described as a journey of an individual who goes through a series of questions that make him wonder if his QTP skills are as good as he thought they were. The questions are the ones we face on an every day basis to questions we have always wanted to seek answers for. The information made available through this book is written by the world renowned QTP expert, Tarun Lalwani. This book is written with only one vision in mind – there should be a formal source that aims to get rid of all misinformation that we see on an every day basis when searching answers to questions involving QTP.

Because this book is written in the form of a novel with a simple storyline it is very easy to follow through. So, instead of being a completely technical read, this book can be said to be a “technical novel” – it includes technical concepts by not being boring :)

I like the concept of “Technical Novel”. I hope this would have more ingredients added to QTP unplugged.
I have a copy of QTP unplugged and its a must read. I guess “And I thought I knew QTP” is something that Tarun experienced with time and sharing his thoughts with us.

Ashutosh: I have added a Q&A section in this post to help answer all questions related to this book. I really liked your inputs so I have included it in the post itself. Thank you!

4 Tarun Lalwani September 26, 2011 at 12:04 pm

@Ashutosh, well this title is what complements QTP Unplugged as such. Both are a must read as such.

But with this one i have tried to change the way things are written. I am just waiting for the preview to get ready and soon I will share the preview PDF. It may not give much on terms of what the book brings on to the plate. But it is a very unique kind of Idea which I feel should be appreciated by the readers. Fingers crossed :)

I have been a regular user of qaforums.com and that is where have interacted through posts with Tarun. I have to salute him for his commendable efforts for being so passionate about QA automation and for QTP tool. It is his dedication & so called passion that within a short time period (since 2004) has made a name for himself. People create sites/apps but its a 1st that someone within IT came up with a thought of having a book on QTP. Haven’t read 1st book, but this book I am looking forward to as it sounds something different. As myself worked on QTP extensively for about 4 years, it will be interesting to find answer to question “I thought I new QTP”.

Truly speaking QTP Unplugged Book is a Half Meal book. It’s not for Beginners, Intermediates or for Experts. It’s like showing the strength of Tarun. The key difference between Tarun’s ‘QTP Unplugged’ and ‘And I Thought I Knew QTP’ books is target audience. The Target People for this book is Beginners.

QTP Unplugged book doesn’t have any target audience. Lot of people are interested to buy the book only because of the brand name of Tarun. But he confused in what to keep and What not to keep in that book. This is happened only because of there is no target people in his mind except writing book on QTP.

What ever the praising he got from various people, that is just because of his knowledge. Now this book is a challenge for Tarun as it is targeting the Beginners. I hope he came down to the level of a beginner when understanding a concept which is written by him.
I am an Automation Lead and a QTP Trainer from Hyderabad. So that I came to know the feelings of various people and documented here.
Sorry If it hurts anybody And All the Best to Tarun & Team.

53 Tarun Lalwani October 7, 2011 at 9:47 am

@Sudhakar, Thanks for your feedback! I do really appreciate it. The QTP Unplugged book was my first writing attempt and I do believe that it may not be perfect. But your observations are accepted as I never wanted to write one as for project implementation. Rather my aim was to write what can give people a direction to expand their horizons in QTP.

If I see from that perspective the book has actually met its goal that I had set when writing the same. But I do take this as a feedback. Hopefully Edition 3 of QTP unplugged will be totally re-designed to match expectations of a larger group.

54 ALN Murthy October 11, 2011 at 5:30 am

QTP Unplugged was truly a book which laid foundations to my career as an automation engineer.

Hi,

Today I completed a requisition order for Quicktest Professional Unplugged, 2nd Edition for our company. My manager and director approved the request on the same day because I argued that the QTP manual and HP provided training can no longer give me the answer to problems/questions I encounter when I’m working with the tool during test script development. Hopefully, QTP Unplugged will fill this gap.

And now I had to learn about this new book from the same author. I hope I win a copy :)
